Choreographic Work and Classic Ballet Teacher
After graduating from the Australian Ballet School in 1998, Simon has worked as a soloist dancer in Australia, Europe and America, undertaking Principal roles with Ballet Graz in Austria, Ballet Mainz in Germany, Schaufuss Ballet in Denmark and Carolina Ballet (USA), before joining Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in New York. Simon has toured and guested throughout the United States, Europe and Asia and benefited from working with many outstanding teachers and choreographers, including Wilhelm Burmann, Adam Luders, Johnny Eliason, Hans Van Manen, Nils Christe, Peter Schaufuss, Darrell Tolone, Peter Brauer, Martin Schlapfer, Donald Mahler, and Robert Weiss. He also performed works by George Balanchine, Frederick Ashton, and John Cranko.
From 2007 until 2017, Simon held the position of Resident Choreographer and then Artistic Director of the Melbourne Ballet Company, where he played a leading role in the renaissance of the Company. Simon produced over 20 original works for MBC and developed a unique and critically acclaimed repertoire. During this period, Simon employed dozens of outstanding professional dancers and commissioned many internationally acclaimed dance-makers, musicians and designers. He toured the company extensively and in 2010 was the recipient of the ‘Spirit of Arts’ award. Under Simon’s direction, the Company was granted funding from Local, State and Federal Government. In addition he organised and presented many highly successful community engagement activities and audience development programs structured to be accessible to a vast demographic. Under Simon’s direction, MBC has built an excellent reputation throughout Australia and beyond.
In 2017, after 10 years at MBC Simon decided to move back to Europe where he is currently producing works for companies in Europe, Asia and Australia.
Simon is regularly invited both to create works and also teach for companies around the world: most recently he has been invited to teach for Carla Fracci in Italy, and to create a major ballet for Ballet Manila in the Philippines. In May, Simon will develop new work for the ‘Forte’ dance program – which will feature dancers from Company Wayne Mcgregor and the Royal Ballet.
Simon has created works on dancers from many major companies, including The Australian Ballet, Opéra National de Paris, The Nederland Dans Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, The Royal New Zealand Ballet, The Hamburg Ballet, The American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, Opera Australia, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Ballet Mainz, Carolina Ballet, Queensland Ballet, La Scala Millan, WA Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, The Australian Ballet School and The Royal Ballet School.
In 2017 Simon was appointed Creative Director of the Rosenberg Ball which is held annually in Zurich. He has also choreographed for feature film and opera and his works have toured extensively.
